U of U MyChart is the secure Epic patient portal used by University of Utah Health for health records, results, appointments, provider messages, prescription renewals, bills, proxy access and virtual visits.
The same hosted MyChart environment also supports selected partner organizations, so this guide first helps you confirm the account you are using and then gives the exact official route for signup, recovery, billing, records, security and family access.
Quick answer: University of Utah Health’s official MyChart portal is mychart.med.utah.edu. MyChart is free. Account help is available at 801-213-5555. Activation links and codes expire after 60 days. Self SignUp is available to adults age 18+, and MyChart now supports two-factor authentication, authenticator apps and optional passkey login.
Private account information belongs only on official U of U Health pages. MyChart-Health.org is an independent informational website. It is not University of Utah Health, Epic or the U of U MyChart portal. Never enter a password, activation code, one-time security code, date of birth, Social Security information, insurance details, medical records or payment data here.
This MyChart Portal Covers More Than University Hospital
University of Utah Health’s official MyChart FAQ says this electronic medical-record environment is used by University of Utah Health and selected independent health-care organizations. Within U of U Health, the portal covers major specialty services as well as neighborhood clinics.
University of Utah Health
University Hospital and U of U Health outpatient practices use this portal for records, visits, results, messages and billing.
Major U of U specialties
The official FAQ specifically includes Huntsman Cancer Institute, Moran Eye Center, University Orthopaedic Center and Huntsman Mental Health Institute / the organization formerly referred to as UNI.
Hosted partner care
U of U Health’s MyChart terms and support materials also identify Fourth Street Clinic and Carson Tahoe Health as organizations that use related U of U-hosted MyChart infrastructure.
Check the organization name before troubleshooting missing records. A patient can have more than one Epic MyChart relationship. U of U’s portal also supports MyChart Central/Lucy for patients who want to organize or reach participating MyChart accounts from multiple health organizations.

U of U MyChart Signup: Three Ways to Activate an Account
University of Utah Health supports activation by direct link, printed activation code and adult Self SignUp. Choosing the right route can avoid an unnecessary support call.
Use the activation email or text if staff sent one
U of U Health says a direct signup link sent by staff lets you activate the account without manually entering an activation code.
Check recent paperwork for a printed code
A personal activation code may appear on a recent billing statement, After Visit Summary or activation letter.
Remember the 60-day deadline
Activation codes and activation hyperlinks expire after 60 days. A code also stops working after it has been used.
If you are 18+, use Self SignUp when you do not have a code
Enter your demographic information and complete the third-party identity-verification questions. U of U’s signup page identifies the identity service as Precise ID powered by Experian.
Do not create a second account if one already exists
The official signup page detects an existing account and sends users back to login recovery. If access cannot be restored online, call 801-213-5555.
Processing note: the current signup page says some submitted account requests can take up to one week for processing and verification before an activation code and instructions are sent.
Identity verification can involve sensitive demographic information. Complete those questions only on the official mychart.med.utah.edu signup page.
Two-Factor Authentication, Authenticator Apps and Passkeys
U of U Health currently supports several account-security methods. This is more than a basic username-and-password portal.
Two-factor authentication
U of U Health requires an additional code when signing in from a new or unsaved device. Saved devices and browsers remain trusted for about 30 days.
Authenticator app
After signing in, patients can configure Google Authenticator or a native iOS authenticator. The app-generated code can replace email/text verification.
Passkey
U of U MyChart also supports passkey login. After initial login, use account settings and Manage passkeys to configure it.
Text-notification fix: U of U’s support page says patients who need to opt back into text messaging can text START to 32359. This is for U of U Health messaging preferences; never send passwords or MyChart security codes by text.
When U of U MyChart Releases Test Results
University of Utah Health publishes unusually specific result-release rules, including a different delay for pathology-related testing.
| Result type | When it appears | What patients should know |
|---|---|---|
| Lab tests | When finalized and sent to the provider. | You may see the result before your clinician explains it. |
| Radiology | When the finalized result is sent to the provider. | Immediate access does not guarantee provider review has already occurred. |
| Pathology, cytology and histology | U of U says these are released 24 hours after finalization. | Sensitive or unexpected information can still appear before a provider conversation. |
Default result notification
U of U MyChart normally sends one daily new-results notification between 8–10 a.m. on weekdays, excluding holidays, when new results are available.
Want each result immediately?
U of U says Communication Preferences can be changed from the daily summary to individual result notifications.
U of U also lets patients adjust settings to delay when results appear. The system cautions that delaying release does not guarantee your provider will review the result before you see it.
Messages, Appointments and a Provider Detail Many Patients Miss
Provider messages
U of U Health says MyChart messages normally receive a response within 1–3 business days. Do not use a portal message for an urgent problem.
Not every doctor you met is messageable
The official FAQ says outpatient providers seen within the last three years are generally available for messaging and appointment requests. Clinicians seen only during a hospital admission or emergency-department visit are not available through those MyChart functions.
You may be able to schedule without signing in
U of U’s current open-scheduling workflow includes a Schedule as Guest option for eligible appointment types. The form asks for patient demographic, contact and insurance information and sends appointment confirmation to the email address provided.
Emergency rule: University of Utah Health explicitly says not to use MyChart for a medical emergency because provider responses may be delayed. Call 911 or use emergency care when appropriate.
Prescription Refill Rules Depend on the Pharmacy
U of U MyChart can request refills electronically when the prescription is filled through a University of Utah pharmacy or the U of U mail-order service. For prescriptions filled at an outside retail pharmacy such as Walgreens, CVS, Smith’s or Target, U of U instructs patients to contact that pharmacy directly.
If no refills remain, University of Utah Health says the pharmacy should contact the provider for a new prescription. MyChart availability does not mean every medication can be renewed instantly.
Proxy Access: Adults, Children and Legal Representatives
Proxy access lets an approved person use their own login to help manage another patient’s care. U of U explicitly advises against sending questions about another person from your own chart.
| Situation | How access is requested | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Another adult | MyChart → Menu → Share My Record → Friends and family access → Invite someone. | The invited adult uses their own MyChart account. More than one trusted adult may be appointed. |
| Child age 0–17 | Log in and select Request Access to a Child’s Record. | U of U’s terms say access may differ from what is visible directly to the patient because of applicable privacy law. |
| Teen age 12–17 | U of U’s terms allow a minor MyChart account when requested through a parent or legal guardian. | Privacy restrictions can affect what a parent/guardian proxy sees. |
| Adult with diminished capacity | Use the clinic process with legal documentation such as appropriate guardianship or health-care authority. | U of U says this cannot be requested through the standard online adult invitation. |
Fast processing when paperwork is correct: U of U Health says a properly completed proxy form is reviewed by Health Information and, when everything is in order, access should generally be processed in less than one business day. Adult invitation access begins when the invited person accepts it.
U of U MyChart Virtual Visit Checklist
U of U Health’s current MyChart virtual-visit instructions include one easy-to-miss requirement: the pre-visit checklist must be completed before the patient can join the visit.
Start up to seven days before the appointment
Open Appointments/Admissions, locate the virtual visit and complete the Pre-Visit Checklist. U of U says it becomes available seven days before the visit.
Test your device before appointment day
Confirm camera and microphone access and run the hardware test. If it fails, call MyChart Support at 801-213-5555 before the appointment.
Join up to 15 minutes early
Open the appointment in MyChart and select Begin Visit. Allow camera and microphone access when your device asks.
If joining fails, change browser or device
U of U Health says Chrome and Safari work best for the current MyChart virtual-visit workflow.
Use a stable connection and private space
University of Utah Health recommends Wi-Fi where possible and says approximately 5 Mbps or faster is suitable for the visit.
U of U Health also allows guests such as family members or caregivers to be invited to eligible video visits through Appointment Details.
Medical Records: MyChart Request vs Formal Release
University of Utah Health lets patients request records from inside MyChart, while formal outside release requests require additional identity and authorization steps.
Request through MyChart
- Log in to U of U MyChart.
- Select Health.
- Select Medical Records Request Form.
- Complete the request using the instructions shown in the secure portal.
Formal release outside MyChart
A formal written request must identify the patient, requested information, dates of service, recipient and include a valid signature.
U of U says requests submitted by mail or fax require the patient’s signature to be notarized. In-person requests can instead be witnessed by U of U Health staff after government-issued photo identification is presented.
Response period
U of U Health says Health Information has up to 30 days to respond to a records request.

801-581-2353
Medical Records fax: 801-581-2177
Record corrections
University of Utah Health publishes a separate Request to Amend Protected Health Information form when a formal medical-record correction is needed.
U of U MyChart Billing, Guest Pay and Missing Balances
Pay inside MyChart
Sign in when you want to use a saved card or bank account, review payment history or set up an available payment plan.
Pay as Guest
Guest Pay uses the guarantor name and guarantor account number printed on the billing statement.

Why a balance can disappear: U of U’s MyChart FAQ says a balance may not appear when the account is closed, paid in full or subject to a billing hold. Contact billing rather than assuming the charge was canceled.
University of Utah Health says it sends three billing statements as notification of a balance, and accounts may be turned over to collections after the third statement if payment arrangements are not made. If you cannot pay in full, use MyChart or contact billing before ignoring the statements.
Cost Estimates, Payment Plans and Financial Assistance
If cost is the problem, U of U Health provides separate tools for estimates, payment plans and hardship assistance rather than treating everything as a MyChart login issue.
Estimate without MyChart
University of Utah Health provides a guest estimate tool for common services.
Estimate with MyChart
Signed-in patients can use insurance information stored in the account when estimating eligible out-of-pocket costs.
Financial advocate
Cost-estimate assistance: 801-581-2957
Documents U of U may request for hardship assistance
- Completed financial-assistance application.
- Letter explaining the current financial situation.
- Current bank statement.
- Prior year’s tax return.
- Paycheck stubs and/or other income documentation from the past two months.
Financial-assistance approval is income-based and requires documentation. Billing and assistance questions can be discussed with Patient Billing at 801-587-6303.
Good Faith Estimate protection: University of Utah Health notes that uninsured or self-pay patients may have federal rights to a Good Faith Estimate. A bill at least $400 above the estimate may qualify for the federal dispute process.
University of Utah Health Plans Members: MyChart Is Not the Only Portal
Older U of U MyChart documentation describes insurance-plan functions inside MyChart, but University of Utah Health Plans now also directs members to a dedicated Member Portal for plan-administration tasks.
Use the current Health Plans Member Portal for
- Benefit information.
- Claims.
- Doctor or pharmacy search.
- ID cards.
- Eligibility.
- Health-plan cost tools.
Use U of U MyChart for clinical care
- Messages with U of U care teams.
- U of U bills.
- Test results.
- Appointments and clinical records.
U of U MyChart App: Current Device Requirements
Install Epic’s official MyChart app and select University of Utah Health as your organization. Some U of U functions remain website-only, so use the browser portal if an account, insurance or advanced record option is missing from the app.
Android
U of U’s current FAQ lists Android 11.0 or newer as the supported mobile-platform baseline.
MyChart on Google PlayiPhone / iPad
The current U of U FAQ lists iOS 18.0 or newer for continued support of current app features.
MyChart on Apple App StoreApple Watch
U of U currently lists watchOS 11.0 as the supported baseline.
Mobile MyChart can also use Face ID or fingerprint protection where supported. If a feature is missing from the app, try the official website before assuming University of Utah Health does not offer it.
U of U MyChart Is Available in Spanish
Website
Select Ver en Español on the login page, or use the language/globe option after signing in.
Mobile app
U of U says the MyChart app switches to Spanish when the phone language is set to Spanish. Communication preferences can also be updated after login.
Some legal medical-record content remains in English, including clinician notes, pathology/radiology reports, test results, diagnoses and medication names. U of U also cautions that Spanish portal messages can take longer when translation is needed because not every care-team member reads Spanish.

This tutorial is published by the U of U Health Provider Network and explains how a University of Utah Health MyChart virtual visit works. It is included because it directly supports one of the real portal tasks covered above.

Texts, Notifications and Account-Security Tips
U of U texts are currently one-way
University of Utah Health says its patient text notifications can alert you to appointments, MyChart updates and other care information, but it does not currently provide two-way text conversations. Replying to a routine system text does not start a care-team chat.
Use secure MyChart for actual portal messages
MyChart messages are sent while securely signed in to the website or mobile app. Keep your email account and phone private because both can be involved in login recovery and two-factor authentication.
Do not give anyone a one-time code. A real support workflow may send a code to your phone or email, but the purpose of the code is to prove that you control that account. Enter it only where the official U of U MyChart process instructs you to do so.
